Afrofuturism & Time Travel as Healing Praxis | Convo w/ Sara Makeba Daise

In 2019, two BlackQueerFemmesHealing created a time portal. It was under the name of “Conversations with Friends”, a sometimey video series for patrons & monthly members of JTP. However, this conversation happened in the liminal, digital space between Jade’s kitchen in the American Midwest & Sara’s lush purple home living space in the American Southeast. This narrowed down to two Black asf locations, with a huge digital expanse between them. Of course, Black folk magick & mysticism ensued!

In this episode, Jade T. Perry (yours truly) & Sara Makeba Daise discuss the healing praxis of BlackQueer Femmes & Black Feminists, Afrofuturism & Hoodoo & Everyday Conjure, epigenetic trauma & the healing thereof! Moreover, what they did was to create a portal of healing sisterhood, which also offered space for reflections on love, re-membering & retelling as ancestral veneration, relationships & non-monogamy, and finding new ways to live ourselves into the brilliantly Black futures we are hoping for.

Every year since, Sara and I have revisited this conversation. We’ve added to it in our private messages, expounded upon it in live virtual gatherings like Weds. Night Study, and of course, I’ve assigned it to participants in our respective courses. It’s just that good! And it never seems to get old. It’s more and more powerful with every revisit. And so!

For the year 2022, I wanted to give this piece a new ‘home’ on the blog because goodness like this deserves to be shared. For patrons & friends, this is a past message becoming present. For folx who are just seeing this, welcome to the time portal! For those in the future, we are so proud of the ways that you will continue to integrate the lessons of BlackQueer Feminist Healing praxis, ever expanding on them for generations to come. May it deepen the rivers of your soul, as you deepen ours from the future.
