What to expect from tarot, oracle, & mixed method readings

“Truth’ is in the action generated, the social reality reconstituted, and the resultant well-being of the people…”
- African Divination Systems: Ways of Knowing, Peek, 1991

Readings can help you gain perspective, options, guidance, creative approaches, and deeper information and insights into yourself, your spiritual development, and matters of life such as career, relationships (platonic, romantic, & otherwise), creative practices, and more!

My reading style has been described by clients & colleagues as “compassionate truth-telling.” It is informed by years of study, teaching, and lived experience as a BlackQueerDisabled Femme[inist], Interdisciplinary Artist, Sex & Kink positive practitioner, & Interfaith “Churchy Mystic” ©. Readings are called “mixed method” because while I use tarot as a primary tool, I may also utilize oracle cards, coins, dice, bones & curios, and/or divining mat if the reading calls for it & the client consents.

Typically, readings are situated in the present to observe & uncover patterns, trends, or lessons to keep in mind for your situation & personal empowerment. From the present, we can explore patterns and advice that may serve us in the future. However, I do not provide predictions of a completely fixed or “final” future – because I believe in the power of your intentional change & transformation. I also believe in a circular idea of time - where the PresentFuturePast informs each other in interconnected ways. So, while we might engage future probabilities, it is important to remember that life is an organic process.

“But wait… my Gramma’nem said tarot cards were evil and demonic?!”

That is a WHOLE different conversation, and I address that here.

What’s the deal with tarot decks & oracle cards?

Tarot decks typically hold a system of 78 cards. They are split up between major life themes, energies, archetypal imagery (Major Arcana), and cards that represent the everyday matters of life (Minor Arcana). Tarot cards are also typically broken down into suits that depict the elements of Fire (Wands), Earth (Coins / Pentacles), Water (Cups), and Air (Swords). These suits help us to understand where a pattern is set, what actions are happening, and ways we can address our situations.

There are different kinds of tarot systems, and typically, I use updated versions of the Rider-Waite-Smith system. (Fun fact: Pamela Coleman-Smith, the illustrator of the original RWS deck, was rumored to be Catholic & Jamaican. We do know that they used a lot of Catholic imagery in the breakthrough 1910 deck & that they lived as a touring artist, illustrator, & storyteller in London).

Tarot tools have come a long way since the RWS offering of 1910. There are many kinds of decks, and contemporary artists have put their spin on tarot concepts. This means there is a diversity of reading types and images we can pull from!

Oracle decks are as vast as their creators. Many times, oracle decks are cards that address a certain theme (i.e. colors, crystals, animals) OR a variety of concepts that cannot be found in the tarot. They can be loosely interpretive, providing only a picture. They can also be highly descriptive with lots of information on the card itself or within a corresponding guidebook. There are so many options with oracle decks. I utilize these, and other tools, for added insights when tarot provides limitations.

Why do folks say that readings can foretell your future?

Think of it as taking a look at your bank statements. The numbers are symbols that we interpret. Based on the symbols, we make decisions on possible moves we’ll make. If we look deeply at where & how we spend in the present, we can gauge where things might be going in the future. We can estimate that we’ll have X dollars in the future. Maybe that future is tomorrow. Maybe that future is next week, next month, or next year. Either way, we use numerical symbols to try & interpret real-world outcomes.

However, we also know that life is co-created by factors within and outside our control. Perhaps you find money on a walk in the neighborhood. Perhaps a relative or friend sends you a gift. Maybe you will get a raise. That changes the future in big & small ways.

Perhaps your car brakes need replacing, the rent increases, or the baby needs a new pair of shoes. That also changes the future in big & small ways.

Other readers believe quite differently, and that’s okay! Some readers are focused on future predictions. However, readings from jadetperry.com tend to be holistically focused, covering a range of timelines & truths.
